Durban - Supporters of KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu could face disciplinary action for marching on the African National Congress’s provincial offices last week.

On Tuesday the party’s newly elected secretary Supa Zuma said: “We will deal with their issues, but we will also deal with their conduct.”

Zuma was speaking at a press conference at the party’s provincial office, following the first meeting over the past weekend of the newly elected provincial executive committee (PEC).

Earlier this month Mchunu was ousted as party provincial chairman at the ANC’s provincial elective conference held in Pietermaritzburg.

In a tight vote he was replaced by Zuma’s predecessor, Zihle Zikalala.

Mchunu’s supporters claimed that the vote was rigged and last week marched on the provincial headquarters and handed over a memorandum to national executive committee member Joe Paahla?.

Zuma said he could not comment on what action had been taken regarding the complaints submitted by the dissatisfied Mchunu supporters.

“We respect the right of ANC members to raise grievances of any kind with the leadership of the ANC, however we always prefer that such matters are handled internally and in a peaceful and dignified manner.”

Zuma said the PEC had received a letter from Mchunu distancing himself from the protest march.

Zuma said he would also not comment on allegations that the party alliance partners — the SA Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of SA Trade Unions — had concerns over the outcome of the ANC’s provincial elective conference.

Last week at an SACP press conference, Themba Mtembu, said that members of the SACP were unhappy with events at the conference.
