Johannesburg - DA MP Beverley Abrahams has defected to the African National Congress, ANC spokesman Moloto Mothapo said on Tuesday.

“Abrahams resigned from the party through a statement, which she read out during today's (Tuesday) sitting of the National Council of Provinces,” he said.

Abrahams was the Democratic Alliance member for Gauteng in the NCOP.

Her name is on the ANC's candidate list for Parliament submitted to the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) on Tuesday afternoon. She was number 118 on the list.

Mothapo said: “She expressed her commitment to be part of the ANC's tireless efforts to move South Africa forward.”

DA spokesman John Moodey confirmed the resignation and said the party had already sent through a letter to the Gauteng legislature about her removal.

The DA is also set to lose four councillors in Tshwane during the next two council meetings.

ANC deputy chairperson in Tshwane, Mapiti Matsena on March 7

told Sapa that the four would leave the DA in pairs during the next two council meetings.

“We agreed with them not to do it 1/8defect 3/8 at the same time. It is going to be two per every council meeting until the elections,” he said.

Four DA councillors from Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg joined the ANC in February.

The defection of the two from Ekurhuleni was announced on February 11, the day of the DA's march to the ANC's Luthuli House headquarters for real jobs.

The two from Johannesburg were announced on February 27. The pair, Toni Molefe and Sipho Masigo, served as DA proportional representation councillors in the City of Johannesburg. Molefe was DA deputy chief whip and Masigo the party's deputy chairman in Gauteng.
