Johannesburg - The office of the ANC Chief Whip on Tuesday welcomed government's new framework for urban development.
“The first-of-its-kind approach was officially unveiled with the launch of the discussion document 'Towards an Integrated Urban Development Framework' by the department of co-operative governance... on Friday,” it said in a statement.
The framework would go through an extensive consultation process with a view to design a national blueprint to manage the country's rural to urban transition.
“The new plan will draw from the provisions of the National Development Plan, which requires all our cities to serve as economic growth drivers through improved spatial efficiency and social inclusion.”
It said “global evidence” suggested that a failure to manage urban growth adequately would worsen urbanisation over the long-term and undermine both urban and rural development.
“We are therefore pleased with this progressive initiative by the department,” the statement said.
“We urge various stakeholders and communities to actively participate in this consultation process, which will culminate in the building of a fully integrated developmental state consisting of economically viable rural and urban communities.”
