The Democratic Alliance's Professor Annette Combrinck will govern as the mayor of Potchefstroom for at least three months before she is ousted by a vote of no confidence, the ANC reportedly said.

Since Combrinck unexpectedly became the mayor two weeks ago, the DA has been on high alert for any attempts by the ANC to remove Combrinck from her post, Beeld reported.

Her predecessor, Maphetle Maphetle, said in an SABC interview on Thursday that the ANC would respect the city council rule stating that a motion of no confidence may not be initiated twice within the same three-month period.

“All is not lost,” Mephetle said about the DA takeover, which happened after he and his supporters walked out after a motion of no confidence was accepted with the support of many ANC members.

The subsequently reduced ANC caucus's candidate was beaten by 20 votes to 19 by the united opposition (DA, FF and Cope), who all voted for Combrinck.

“We were irresponsible, it shouldn't have happened. The ANC deploys the mayor. Anyone who votes against the mayor is acting outside the ANC mandate. We will initiate a motion of no confidence in three months time,” he said. - Sapa
