Johannesburg - The ANC Youth League national task team on Thursday said delegates were ready for the organisation’s 25th national elective conference, despite a group of disgruntled members having approached the North Gauteng High Court to interdict the conference.

All provinces, except Gauteng, have held their provincial general councils, the NTT said.

“It is expected that Gauteng province, which is currently conducting and finalising its own provincial council, would be ready by the time the conference opens on Friday.”

“The NTT is pleased with the ANCYL provinces’ state of readiness and preparations, which was characterised by enthusiastic, robust discussions aimed at ensuring that this young people’s festival of ideas emerge with radical and progressive programme to advance the agenda of South Africa’s youth.”

A group of disgruntled ANCYL members in the North West approached the high court on Thursday to stop the conference from going ahead. The group reportedly accused the NTT of ignoring appeals lodged against some of the conference delegates.

They also claimed rigging of votes at various branches in the province.

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa is the coordinator of the NTT, while Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula is the convenor. Some delegates had already arrived in buses at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Johannesburg early Thursday. The delegates were then transported to the Tshwane events centre in Pretoria for accreditation.

The national conference was postponed numerous times due to infighting and chaotic provincial congresses. The conference was scheduled to be held in June, but was postponed to September as work at branch level had not been completed.

South African Deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to address the conference on Friday, while Mbalula would later deliver the organisation’s political overview.
