Johannesburg - The ANC Youth League wished African National Congress MP Winnie Madikizela-Mandela well on her 77th birthday on Thursday.

“We wish her all the best that life can offer at her graceful age,” the ANCYL said in a statement.

“May she live longer as she continues to be our source of wisdom and courage in our struggle for a better life for all,” it said.

The ANCYL said it was grateful to Madikizela-Mandela for “keeping intimate political contact” with it and for providing counsel.

“She is amongst the stalwarts of the congress movement in whose honour we dedicate our efforts to mobilise the first time voters of 2014 provincial and national elections,” it said.

“As leaders of the majority of these young people we choose to be called the Mandela generation, not the 'born frees'.”

It said this name should be adopted because the majority of the youth was born during the tenure of Madikizela-Mandela's ex-husband Nelson Mandela as president.

Thursday was the 26th day Mandela spent at home in Johannesburg after being discharged from a Pretoria hospital, where he spent nearly three months being treated for a recurring lung infection.
