Durban - ANC Youth League leaders from the Julius Malema era - and those appointed in the aftermath of Malema’s ousting - should forget about receiving nominations from the league in KwaZulu-Natal.

This was the word from Mafika Mndebele, of the league’s Emalahleni region, when he addressed the Young Communist League rally in Durban at the weekend.

Mndebele named former deputy president, Ronald Lamola, former treasurer, Pule Mabe, and former interim task team co-ordinator, Magasela Mzobe, as among those who would “never have the support of KZN”.

Mabe and Lamola served in the leadership that was dissolved in 2013, while Magasela was in the interim leadership tasked with rebuilding the league - only for it to be disbanded last November.

Mndebele said the league wanted new leaders who exuded fresh air.

Mndebele’s statement comes amid reports of yet another postponement of the national elective congress, while KZN was still to decide on preferred candidates.

The league’s congress was set to be held from June 25 to June 28.

KZN provincial secretary, Thanduxolo Sabelo, said on Sunday that the province had yet to convene regional general councils (RGCs), where leadership nominations would to be made before they were consolidated.

Sabelo blamed this on delays in the verification of branches eligible to attend the RGCs.

Meanwhile, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa, who is the co-ordinator of the task team preparing for the congress, said on Sunday that a meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, with provincial secretaries to decide on a new date for the congress.
