Johannesburg - The Auditor General will audit the Westonaria local municipality, west of Johannesburg, which is responsible for areas such as Bekkersdal, it said on Tuesday.

“The Auditor General of SA (Agsa) confirms that it had received a request from the Gauteng MEC for co-operative governance Jacob Mamabolo to audit the Westonaria local municipality,” spokesman Africa Boso said.

“As part of its audit processes, the Agsa is still evaluating the request and will pronounce on the way forward on this matter as soon as the scope and terms of engagement have been clarified.”

In the run up to the general elections in May, Bekkersdal was dogged by violent protests.

Mamabolo met the leadership in Bekkersdal in June after weeks of service delivery protests.

Residents in the area have accused the municipality of maladministration and corruption.
