Arts and culture portfolio committee chairwoman Thandile Sunduza was mocked by social media commentators after her appearance in an ill-fitting bright yellow boob tube on Thursday. Next day Sunduza collapsed at OR Tambo International Airport and was taken to Netcare Park Lane Hospital.

On Sunday, she took to Facebook to let her fans and detractors alike know that she and her baby were doing well.

“It’s not the dress issue. I was just amazed that people can be so cruel, nasty. Some are apologising now.”

Before her collapse, Sunduza had on Facebook acknowledged humorously the fashion disaster. “I am seven months pregnant, it’s not a secret. A pregnant woman can’t just walk into a shop and buy a new dress.

“Thanks to the designer who let me down last minute. The dress was torn, cloth falling – had to cut it in the office, it was a disaster. Even my family members are laughing and teasing me. I won’t be surprised if I get a miscarriage.”

Later that day, Sunduza responded with pride and confidence to concerns that she was hurt by the insulting online comments: “I am a woman, a beautiful, bold, black, African woman. I am entitled to wear a boob tube. Just because I’m fat, I must be confined to certain clothes, no. People can compare you to a caterpillar or teletubbie or animal, I don’t care.”
