Rustenburg – Coalition talks were still on going in Rustenburg on Monday, the Botho Community Movement (BCM) said.

“Negotiations have not been finalised, we are still talking,” said founder Ofentse Kombe.

“We are open for negotiations with any party.”

The BCM won a seat in the August 3, municipal elections, a seat that could decide which party controls the platinum rich city of Rustenburg.

The ANC won 43 council seats, failing to score an outright win to control the municipality.

The Economic Freedom Fighters won 24 seats and the Democratic Alliance won 14 seats. The Forum 4 Service Delivery (F4SD) won four seats, while the African Independent Congress (AIC), the United Democratic Movement, and Freedom Front Plus each one a seat.

A DA-EFF coalition would need small parties to take control of the municipality, The ANC would also need at least two small parties to have at 45 seats to control the municipality.

Sources closed to coalition talks said no formal meeting between parties have taken place since it became known that Rustenburg was the only hung municipality in the North West.

“There is lack of leadership from parties with more seats in Rustenburg, they are not talking, they are waiting for their national offices to decide,” the source said.

A meeting called by F4SD was scheduled for Monday evening, hoping to roll the coalition wheel ahead of the first council meeting on Friday.

BCM said it was open to go into coalition with any party prepared to accede to their demand of developing Boitekong.

BCM was formed in Boitekong east of Rustenburg, with the aim of fighting for the development of the township.

The Economic Freedom Fighters was expected to announced its position on coalitions in Alexandra on Wednesday.
