Johannesburg - A Constitutional Court bid to uncover the identity of political party donors has been launched, the City Press newspaper reported on Sunday.

Rights organisation My Vote Counts argued in its founding affidavit that there was an “absence of adequate and accurate information about each party's likely loyalties”.

The organisation wants the Constitutional Court to compel Parliament to establish rules forcing the disclosure of private funders of political parties.

Various political parties, the presiding officers of both houses of Parliament, President Jacob Zuma, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and Justice Minister Michael Masutha have been listed as respondents in the case.

The case - submitted on July 16 - is currently listed at the Constitutional Court as awaiting direction. - Sapa
