Gaborone - A Botswana opposition party, the Botswana National Front, on Tuesday sent condolences to the families of South African Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane and his two bodyguards.

Chabane and Sergeants Lesiba Sekele and Lawrence Lentsoane were killed when a truck made a U-turn in front of their VW Touareg on the N1 between Mokopane and Polokwane around 1am on Sunday morning.

BNF spokesman Moeti Mohwasa said Chabane's loss would not only be felt by his family, his party, the African National Congress, but by the whole of South Africa and the region.

Chabane represented the ANC at the BNF's national congress, which was held in Gantsi in 2013. His “humility, deep sense of understanding of politics and intellect inspired them”, Mohwasa said.

The truck driver involved in the crash appeared briefly in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. Amukelani Rikhotso would remain in custody until his next court appearance on April 6. The State indicated it would oppose bail.
