Azapo on Wednesday called on all South Africans to boycott paying for their TV licences, accusing the SABC of “unfair and unequal” coverage of various political parties.
As South Africans went to the polls in the local government elections, the Azanian People’s Organisation’s (Azapo) youth president Amukelani Ngobeni complained that the SABC was giving preference to the ANC.
Azapo was being ignored as if it did not exist, he said.
The SABC’s statement that it had given fair and equal coverage to all parties’ election campaigns was “rubbish”, said Ngobeni.
“We’ve invited them to rallies and they did not show face. When they covered it, it was only shown on TV for about 30 seconds so it’s not true that there was fair coverage,” he said.
He said by the look of things, some senior ANC officials “literally sleep with cameras” in their homes.
“Local government elections are like a marathon.... We can't have a national broadcaster that is an election tool and then expect us to pay for our TV licences. They are giving the ANC an advantage.” – Sapa
