Cape Town – Former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe is on his way to Parliament after the institution confirmed on Friday he will be sworn in as an MP.

This has widened speculation that Molefe would take over from Pravin Gordhan as Finance Minister in the next few weeks.

Speculation has been rife that Molefe would succeed Gordhan at the Treasury but the Presidency has denied this.

Parliament has confirmed he will become an ANC MP. “Parliament wishes to acknowledge the nomination of Mr Brian Molefe, to fill a vacancy on the North West list of ANC MPs, which is depleted,” said Parliament.

National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete is yet to decide the date for Molefe to be sworn in.

Molefe’s arrival in Parliament comes just a few days before Gordhan delivers his Budget on Wednesday.

The ANC in North West confirmed a few weeks ago that Molefe was coming to Parliament.
