Johannesburg - Municipal by-elections will take place in three provinces on Wednesday, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said.
A total of 16 wards would be contested by 52 candidates representing nine political parties and five independent candidates, the IEC said on Tuesday.
Fourteen of the by-elections would be held in the Eastern Cape.
Buffalo City Metropolitan municipality's (East London) Ward Three was being contested by the African National Congress, the Democratic Alliance and United Democratic Movement.
The ward was previously represented by the DA, but the councillor's party membership was terminated.
There were 12 by-elections in the Mbhashe municipality (Dutywa). All 12 wards were previously represented by the ANC, but became vacant when the councillors' party membership was terminated.
ANC spokesman in the province Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the councillors were removed after they decided to remove the mayor in the area without the party's “blessing” and without following the proper procedures.

* Ward Four was being contested the ANC, Cope and the United Congress.
* Ward Five was being contested by the ANC, the DA, the United Congress and UDM;
* Ward 10 was being contested by the ANC, Cope, DA and United Congress;
* Ward 15 was being contested by the ANC, Cope, DA and UDM;
* Ward 17 was being contested by the ANC and UDM;
* Ward 21 was being contested by independent candidate Bambelela Nicholus Mqoqi and the ANC;
* Ward 24 was being contested by independent candidate Fikiswa Ndaule, the ANC, Cope and the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania;
* Ward 26 was being contested by independent candidate Ziyanda Pencil and the ANC;
* Ward 28 was being contested by the ANC and UDM;
* Ward 29 was being contested by independent candidate Luyanda Archibald Gogoba, the ANC, the DA, the PAC and UDM; and
* Ward 30 was being contested by independent candidate Thelma Zoliswa Lubaxa, the ANC, the DA and the United Congress.
Ward Seven in the Elundini municipality (Mount Fletcher) was being contested by the ANC and the African Independent Congress. The ward became vacant when the previous ANC councillor died.
One by-election each was taking place in Gauteng and the Western Cape.
Ward 15 in the Emfuleni municipality (Vereeniging) in Gauteng was being contested by the ANC and the DA. The previous DA councillor resigned.
Ward Four in the Matzikama municipality (Vredendal) in the Western Cape was being contested by the ANC, the DA, the Patriotic Alliance and the Peoples' Independent Civic Organisation. The ward was previously represented by the DA, but the councillor resigned.
