Johannesburg - Municipal by-elections in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape went smoothly on Wednesday, the Independent Electoral Commission said.

“Voting stations close at 9pm (Wednesday) after which vote counting will start immediately,” said spokeswoman Kate Bapela.

The African National Congress and Democratic Alliance are contesting ward 28 in the Merafong City municipality, Carletonville, after the DA councillor resigned.

Ward 22 in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape is contested by the ANC, the DA, and the Stellenbosch Civic Association.

Three candidates representing the ANC, the Inkatha Freedom Party, and the National Freedom Party are contesting ward seven in the Vulamehlo municipality in KwaZulu-Natal. The ward became vacant after its ANC councillor died.

Results of the elections will be known by Thursday morning.

The results would also be posted on the IEC website early Thursday morning, said Bapela. - Sapa
