Cape Town - Political support for Hlaudi Motsoeneng appears to be something of the past, as Cabinet on Thursday called on the SABC board to respect the court ruling overturning his appointment as chief operations officer and condemned its bid to retain his services in a new post.

Presidency Minister Jeff Radebe urged the board to respect “the letter and the spirit” of the Supreme Court of Appeal’s refusal to allow an appeal and asked the communications minister to meet with the board to ensure this happened.

This comes a day after the board decided to re-appoint the controversial chief operations officer in another position in a move that was swiftly slated by ANC Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu on Wednesday as “the last straw that breaks the camel’s back”.

Radebe said Cabinet read the board’s decision as disrespectful of the rule of law.

“Cabinet calls on the SABC board to abide by the letter and spirit of the SCA ruling. Attempts to subvert the SCA ruling through legally suspect interpretations border on violating the constitutional principle of legality and challenge the constitutionally assigned judicial authority of our courts,” he quoted from the Cabinet statement.

“The decision to re-appoint Mr Motsoeneng in a new position shows disrespect of a rule of law.

He added: “Cabinet directed the minister of communications to urgently take steps to address this matter with the SABC board.”

Earlier on Thursday, the SABC posted a net loss of R411 million for the 2015/16 financial year.
