The Western Cape ANC Youth League has welcomed a decision made by the ANC in the province at the weekend calling for the reinstatement of expelled leader Julius Malema and two others.

The ANCYL said in a statement on Monday that it supported the motion to tackle the National Disciplinary Committee of Appeal's decisions regarding Malema, suspended secretary general Sindiso Magaqa and spokesman Floyd Shivambu.

The ANC in the Western Cape's motion followed the provincial general council (PGC) at the weekend.

“The ANCYL in the Western Cape impressed on the PGC the urgency that the special ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) that sits (Monday) resolves the matter through a political solution.”

The league in the province want Malema's expulsion and Shivambu and Magaqa's suspensions set aside.

ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu refused on Sunday to comment on newspaper reports that the upcoming NEC meeting would discuss the fate of Malema.

The special NEC was convened to discuss preparations for the party's national policy conference. But according to the Sunday Times and the Sunday Independent it would also discuss Malema's fate.

Mthembu said the NEC members would decide on Monday whether they would hold a press briefing or not. The meeting would take place in Irene outside Pretoria. – Sapa
