Cape Town - Democratic Alliance leader in the Cape Town metro, Grant Pascoe announced on Monday that he will be leaving the party to join the ANC.

The shock announcement comes just weeks before the provincial and national elections.

Pascoe, who has twice been a strong contender for the metro’s mayoral chain, most recently served on Mayor Patricia de Lille’s executive as the mayoral committee member for tourism, events and marketing.

Pascoe, a former national Youth Commissioner and one-time chair of the Mitchell’s Plain subcouncil, played a critical role in mobilising support and the all-important coloured vote for the DA in this area.

The ANC said in a statement: "Comrade Pascoe joins as an ordinary member and will assist our efforts to win back the Western Cape."
