Parliament – Parliament’s ad hoc committee charged with nominating a candidate to become South Africa’s next public protector on Friday elected ANC MP Makhosi Khoza as its chairwoman.

It has a deadline to report to the National Assembly by August 31, in the next parliamentary term after the municipal elections, and is expected to “definitely” meet during the two-and-a-half month recess that began on Friday, members said.

The Democratic Alliance’s Phumzile van Damme, who sits on the committee, said the official opposition hoped to ensure a suitable candidate was found to succeed Thuli Madonsela.

Her term ends in October after seven years in which she became a household name and carved out a prominent profile for the office, but frequently drew the ire of the governing party with investigations that pointed to executive failure.

“We are looking to working with the committee to make sure the best candidate is selected to replace the formidable Thuli Madonsela,” Van Damme said.
