Cape Town - The ANC has distanced itself from remarks allegedly made by ANC MP Strike Ralegoma calling for the Springbok emblem to be changed.

Ralegoma, who is also a member of the portfolio committee on sports and recreation, reportedly asked for the emblem of the national rugby team to be changed during a committee meeting on Tuesday.

“For successful transformation, all national teams must play with a single emblem,” Ralegoma was quoted as saying.

“The Protea is used by all other sports as the emblem, but there is Saru that will use the Springbok.

“It is important that we have a single logo.”

ANC national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said in statement on Wednesday that Ralegoma’s “remarks are not derived from a policy position of the ANC”.
