Pretoria - South Africans must cherish democracy and the fact that they can vote, United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa said on Thursday.

“We are lucky in South Africa compared to other African countries because they change government through the barrel of a gun,” he said at the Electoral Commission of SA's (IEC) national results operations centre in Pretoria.

“We must nurture and cherish our democracy.”

Holomisa said it was an honour for him to participate in elections.

By 1.40pm, the UDM was standing at 99 093 votes.

In 2009, the party won 149 680 of the total votes which was 0.85 percent.

“We are still waiting for votes to come in and hope that out of those we will consolidate,” he said.
