Johannesburg - Corruption affects not only government but public institutions as well, the EFF said on Tuesday.

“The impact corruption has in society cannot be told because it's not just about money, but a value system,” Economic Freedom Fighters Gauteng premier candidate Dali Mpofu told a group of youngsters in Milpark, Johannesburg.

“The current government is corrupting institutions. It is not about the individuals, (President Jacob) Zuma will go, so will I. But if we continue on the current path we are eroding our democracy.”

He was speaking at a campaign hosted by youth culture magazine Live.

The Voting is Power (VIP) campaign is focused on encouraging 16 to 35 year-olds to be active, informed citizens.

The EFF, Democratic Alliance, Agang SA and the African National Congress were answering questions from young people throughout the country who streamed online, and others present at the debate.

DA Gauteng premier candidate Mmusi Maimane said South Africa was facing a different struggle for freedom.

“You cannot talk about freedom when some are throwing away food in Sandton while some are going to bed hungry in Alexandra.”

Agang SA chief operating officer Andrew Gasnolar said the current common problem was growing inequality.

The ANC's Mawethu Rune said social grants were a temporary relief for those who did not have anything.
