Johannesburg - The Congress of SA Trade Union on Friday welcomed President Jacob Zuma's state-of-the-nation speech, but said more needs to be done to fight corruption.

“There is some encouraging news on the war against corruption, with the report that the Special Investigating Unit has increased its capacity; more still needs to be done, however,” it said in a statement.

The trade union federation said it was pleased with “the assurance” by Zuma that by saying education was an essential service “we are not taking away the constitutional rights of teachers as workers, such as the right to strike”.

Government's measures to tackle the crisis of youth unemployment were also welcomed.

“The federation is, however, disappointed that the speech did not adequately confront the problems of poverty and inequality, which, together with unemployment, constitute the triple economic crisis facing the country.”

Cosatu was disappointed Zuma based “so much of his future programmes” on the National Development Plan.
