Cape Town - Criminal charges have been laid against a “senior” City of Cape Town ANC councillor for allegedly offering a “sizeable” tender to lure a DA councillor before the elections, says mayor Patricia de Lille.
She declined to name the councillors involved, saying only that the criminal charges related to the conduct of a councillor “present today in this chamber”. But she did mention that Grant Pascoe, her former mayoral committee member who defected to the ANC before the election, was also implicated in the alleged incident.
She said the incident showed “how morally bankrupt the ANC has become”.
ANC chief whip Xolani Sotashe said the DA needed to provide the names of the councillors involved.
The DA’s new metro chairman, Shaun August, this month confirmed that the party had a recording of a conversation between ANC councillor Jerimia Thuynsma and DA councillor Sheval Arendse.
Thuynsma could be heard confirming that Pascoe received an inducement for leaving the DA. Arendse was allegedly offered a R5 million government contract. Pascoe and the ANC have denied this.
