Manabar, KZN - Two weeks before he died in a hail of bullets, ANC Hibiscus Coast councillor, Wandile Mkhize’s car window was smashed by unknown men at his home, his brother revealed yesterday.
Mkhize, 34, was shot dead in a drive-by shooting outside his home in Manaba near Margate on Saturday night, as he was walking with his friend and fellow councillor, Nhlakanipho Shabane.
Shabane, shot several times, is still in a critical condition in hospital. He is under police guard.
Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, Nkosi Mkhize, 28, said his brother had told him of the incident about two weeks ago in which his car, which was parked at the house, was vandalised. Mkhize was at home at the time.
“He said he had heard the window of his Corolla Verso get smashed, but instead of rushing out to see what had happened, he said he had chosen to stay safe and not come out of his house.”
Nkosi said he was not sure if his brother had reported the matter to the police.
“The strange thing was that nothing had been taken from the car,” he said. “It was just smashed and whoever it was ran away.”
Nkosi said his brother had also written about the incident on his Facebook page.
Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge, provincial police spokesman, said there was no record of Mkhize opening a case, nor had he reported that his life was in danger.
Police are offering a reward of up to R100 000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspects in the shooting.
Mdunge said a white Toyota Tazz or Conquest was seen in Forest Road in Margate soon after the shots were fired.
“It is alleged that the suspects were travelling in this car,” Mdunge said.
The police investigations are being handled by a team led by Lieutenant-Colonel Msizi Nyuswa from the Hawks in Port Shepstone.
