Leaders and councillors at Moretele Municipality should not be trusted with service delivery when they cannot even build a proper tarred road leading to their offices, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema told marchers in Makapanstad on Wednesday.

Malema said the poor condition of the road to the municipal offices, on the outskirts of Hammanskraal, was proof of a struggling municipality.

The residents, under the banner of the North West Rural Communities, were delivering a memorandum to mayor Jonas Lehare and municipal manager Roger Nkhumise.

In the memorandum, the organisation called for an end to corruption in the municipality and demanded adequate infrastructure for water supply, including taps at each household.

They want roads to be upgraded, and demanded that the municipality disclose its policies and procedures so that fraudulent and corrupt activities can be eradicated. They promised to march again if their demands were not met in 14 days.

But it was Malema who stole the show in front of a strong police presence. He told the crowd: “ANC officials and councillors prioritise having sex in their offices over service delivery. The offices have been turned into bedrooms.

“That’s why they cannot deliver any service because they only wake up on pay day.

“They buy expensive alcohol instead of giving you water. There is no service delivery here. How do you expect a mayor to attend to your needs when he drives on a road like this one every day?”

The firebrand politician said even though the ANC leaders knew that people were suffering, they were busy pursuing their own interests.

He also took a swipe at President Jacob Zuma, saying: “Instead of giving you water, Zuma built a R1 million kraal for his cattle. He spent R2.8m on his swimming pool when he cannot swim, and R500 000 on his wife’s spaza shop, while your houses combined do not cost that much. Do not be ashamed to tell him that his cows that sleep in a million rand kraal, and not you, will vote for him.

He also had a word for the police: “We chose to come here because North West police like killing people. Unfortunately they are well behaved today.”

Malema said the EFF was helping organise service delivery protests. He, however, urged protesters not to burn infrastructure, saying the EFF would not want to waste money rebuilding when it was in government.

As the EFF leader was leaving in his grey Mercedes Viano, ANC supporters who had gathered nearby sang struggle and pro-Zuma songs.
