Religion is being used constantly by ANC members in politics, said DA delegate Rick Raubenheimer on Sunday.

He asked for an amendment on the party's open “unity in diversity” resolution at its 2012 federal congress in Boksburg.

“The church should be kept out of politics.”

He said ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema had his congregation praying for him and that President Jacob Zuma also used religion in politics.

The party then resolved to continue protecting the principles of the constitution, and specifically the separation of powers between different spheres of government and between church and state.

DA MP Willmot James said cultural diversity had become one of the defining characteristics of society.

He said unity could be found in diversity when there was human solidarity in pursuit of common purpose. - Sapa
