DA, ANC neck and neck in Johannesburg

Pretoria - The Democratic Alliance was leading the vote count in the City of Johannesburg with 41.78 percent on Friday morning, while the African National Congress was close behind with 41.75 percent of the votes.

At 4am, 91 percent of the votes from the 2016 municipal elections had been counted.

According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa's (IEC) website, the DA had 698 083 votes, the ANC had 697 728 votes and the Economic Freedom Fighters had 10.8 percent of the counted ballots with 180 547 votes.

The DA was leading the vote in the highly-contested Tshwane Metro Municipality with 43.49 percent just after 4am on Friday morning, as the counting continued.

The DA had 472 136 of the votes while the ANC had 41.91 percent with 454 980 votes. The Economic Freedom Fighters had 10.57 percent with 114 731 votes, according to the IEC website.

The final results are expected on Saturday.
