Johannesburg - The African National Congress and the Democratic Alliance retained contested wards through by-elections held in seven provinces.

Eleven wards were contested, nine by the ANC and two by the DA.

At least 25 candidates participated in the by-elections, representing six political parties and six independent candidates.

The ANC retained three wards in KwaZulu-Natal, two in North West. No by-elections were held in one of the wards in Moretele, North West, as it was uncontested. The party retained one ward each in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape.

The DA also retained two wards in Cape Town and Ceres.
