Durban - The DA in KwaZulu-Natal said it was disappointed with the new provincial executive announced by Premier Senzo Mchunu on Monday.

The DA said very little had changed, with only two new faces in the provincial executive.

“We believe that the time was ripe for a shake-up. Instead, with the premier’s cabinet announcement he has, in most instances, merely embedded mediocrity,” said DA leader in KZN, Sizwe Mchunu.

But Mchunu said the two new appointees - Belinda Scott and Cyril Xaba - had perform-ed well as chairpersons of portfolio committees and hoped they would do well.

“Certainly, MEC Xaba has his work cut out for him having inherited something of a poisoned chalice in agriculture. KZN’s agriculture department is dysfunctional and remains riddled with unresolved corruption cases.”

The ANC was pleased with the appointments, saying the MECs were seasoned leaders who would “collectively speed up the implementation of our progressive policies and programmes”.

ANC provincial secretary, Sihle Zikalala, said the restructuring of certain government departments would ensure that the provincial government operated efficiently and cost effectively.
