DA councillor Sheval Arendse is unrepentant about allegations of maladministration, boasting on social media of his lavish lifestyle.

The allegations relate to a water meter project in Mitchells Plain.

A news report this week looked into Arendse’s finances and his apparent life of luxury.

He is the ward 82 councillor and has allegedly admitted the wages of staff employed by a sub-contractor were paid directly into his bank account.

Arendse further alleged he would withdraw the money and pay the workers in cash every Sunday.

Following the article he took to Facebook saying: “Yes I have an R400k car, R350k boat and two houses in West Coast. Wela Kapela.”

The post said: “None of you, who read the Daily Voice, could read between the lines and you have no backbone. Ask to listen to the recording that was made, wait until February 15 and then stone me to death.”

The DA’s social media policy says party members must make it clear in what capacity they are posting to social medial - as a private individual or as a party representative.

It also states party members should not embarrass the party by their misuse of social network sites or the internet. Arendse was unavailable for comment.

Dirk Smit, the DA Speaker in the council, said an investigation into Arendse’s alleged maladministration was under way and an independent investigator had been appointed.

Mayor Patricia de Lille said she did not have enough information about the matter to comment .

Later her spokeswoman, Zara Nicholson, said the mayor’s office did not comment on cases or allegations relating to councillors.
