Cape Town - The Western Cape’s MEC for cultural affairs and sport, Theuns Botha, on Sunday announced his resignation from office.

“After a successful term of 20 years as a public representative I have decided to resign from public office with immediate effect,” said Botha.

Botha’s statement follows the announcement on Saturday of Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille as the Democratic Alliance’s Western Cape leader.

Western Cape Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela was named as De Lille’s deputy after pipping incumbent Botha to the post.

Botha said on Sunday his task to help transform the DA had been achieved.

“Many, including myself, worked hard to grow the party and to transform it to mirror our society. The outcome of this provincial congress (Western Cape) is testimony of the success in this regard,” he said.

On his future plans, Botha said he would return to business and farming.

“I will resume my business career full time and am considering various opportunities on offer. I intend to spend more time on my farm and with my wife and family who sacrificed much and supported me throughout my career.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity I had to represent the people of the Western Cape in public office. I am extremely grateful for the consistent support I enjoyed from the majority of DA members and public representatives during the past 15 years. I had the privilege to work with colleagues, staff, citizens and those in private sector, of exceptional quality,” he said.

Botha served in public office and as part of the DA as a local government councillor for nine years, four years as Hessequa Municipality Executive Mayor and 11 years in the provincial parliament.
