The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has welcomed government’s decision to introduce performance assessments for school principals and their deputies.

“We support any initiative aimed at holding leadership in schools accountable for improving the delivery of a quality education,” said DA provincial education spokesperson, Tom Stokes.

The key to improved results lay with improved teacher quality and performance, he said.

“It is both necessary and inevitable that some form of teacher assessment is implemented”, said Stokes.

According to the plan, education authorities are facing the possibility of signing performance contracts. It is likely the system will be expanded to include teachers at a later stage.

“Unions should no longer be allowed to protect ineffective school leaders at the cost of ensuring learners the right to a good education”, Stokes said. -
