Cape Town - The DA had formally requested new National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to revive the dissolved Nkandla ad-hoc committee, the party said on Thursday.

“Baleka Mbete should prove to Parliament and the people of South Africa that her position as ANC national chairperson is not interfering with her obligation to Parliament,” Democratic Alliance MP James Selfe said.

“The ad-hoc committee on the president's submissions in response to the public protector's report on the security upgrades to his Nkandla residence was unable to complete its work given the limited time, scope, and deliberate stalling by the ANC delegates on the committee, before the dissolution of the 4th Parliament,” he said.

Selfe called on Mbete to honour the intentions of the previous Parliament that the committee be re-appointed.

“The DA has urged the speaker to re-establish the ad hoc committee before Friday 6 June 2014 and allow it the appropriate scope, time, and resources to conclude its work,” he said.

The committee was effectively dissolved on April 28.

A report by the committee referring the matter to the fifth Parliament was adopted, following heated arguments between ANC MPs and their opposition counterparts.
