The appointment of the City of Cape Town’s executive management team, which for the first time includes four women, has been welcomed by the main opposition, which described it as a “bold move” by mayor Patricia de Lille.

De Lille’s new team includes six new executive directors: human settlements, Seth Maqethuka; economic, environment and spatial planning, Jacob Hugo; transport, roads and stormwater, Melissa Whitehead; social and early childhood development, Nobandile Bethal Biko; tourism, events and marketing, Anton Groenewald; corporate services, Fatima Habib; and finance, Kevin Jacoby.

Chief financial officer Mike Richardson, human settlements executive director Hans Smit and executive director of corporate services Dave Beretti are out.

An appointment not welcomed by the ANC was that of Mike Marsden as deputy city manager, a new post. He has been responsible for the Cape Town Stadium and the Integrated Rapid Transit system.
