Johannesburg - Azanian People’s Liberation Movement veterans who were excluded from the 1994 integration into the defence force would be verified, the defence department said on Wednesday.
The department and the Azanian People’s Liberation Movement Veterans' Association (Aplamva) met in Pretoria on Tuesday to discuss “matters of mutual concern”.
“The meeting we held noted the need to verify former Aplamva members who were left out during the integration process of 1994/5,” they said in a joint statement afterwards.
“In that regard, the meeting agreed on looking at the verification process with a view to beefing its capacity such that it can operate in an inclusive, transparent and fair manner.”
They agreed at the meeting that there was a need for an “urgent” national conference within the next three months.
“The conference will ensure effective participation of all military veterans on policy and matters affecting them.”
They said there was a need to have a system and policy which would guide and help improve the relationship between Aplamva and other military veteran associations and the department. - Sapa
