Pretoria - Durban’s popular music producer, DJ Bongz, real name Bongani Dlamini, took to social media Twitter on Friday night, to hit back at Julius Malema after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader accused him and his business partner of using their music company and its artists to score deals from the ruling party.
During his media briefing at the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s (IEC) results centre in Pretoria on Friday afternoon, Malema said that DJ Bongz’s company, Mabala Noise, was a front for racketeering and money laundering to benefit an African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) official.
Malema said Mabala Noise, was a beneficiary of ANC’s patronage because it was headed by the ANCYL treasure general, Reggie Nkabinde, who had a questionable relationship with the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane.
Last month, Mabala Noise announced that it had signed several artists including Riky Rick, Nasty C, Major League DJz, Pro Kid, Zakwe and Zola, as well as radio and television personalities such as Khanyi Mbau, Kay Sibiya and Letoya Makhene.
Malema said Mabala Noise had paid a R5 million signing fee to all these artists.
He said Mabala Noise was actually owned by Nkabinde, who went “under the pretext of registering artists” but then took the artists into ANC events for profit, equating this practice to money laundering.
“Reggie gave each artist he registered under Mabala not less than R5 million. Where does Reggie get the money from?” Malema asked.
“If they think I’m talking nonsense they must sue me, then the suing process will give them the opportunity to produce how much they paid those artists.”
Malema insinuated that Nkabinde had an intimate relationship with Mokonyane, and this extended to dispensing patronage to boost Nkabinde’s recording company.
“Reggie makes money from [the] water and sanitation [department], because he has some kind of special relationship with Nomvula Monkonyane. Nomvula likes them young,” Malema said.
But DJ Bongz was not going to take Malema’s punches lying down, and took to Twitter on Friday night saying Malema was talking “cheap politics”.
The DJ said he was parking all he was doing to “address this nonsense just for clarity’s sake”, indicating that they would be suing Malema.
“Bull shit. Court papers are on the way!” DJ Bongz tweeted Malema directly. “R5 million? Juju must stop smoking [dagga]. Nice entertainment though.”
Bongz said it was a pity that people loved negative stories even when they did not have all facts.
“Emabalabala [Mabala Noise’s original name] comes from far. I’ve been up and down building this company,” Bongz said.
“Over the years I’ve learned that if you want to move forward in life, you have to focus on where you’re going and forget about any negativity that you come across.”
The Dj said if the EFF had an agenda with the ANCYL, they must fight it alone.
“Don’t involve something that has nothing to do with politics,” DJ Bongz said.
