Pretoria - Newly-appointed African Union Commission chair Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma remains minister of home affairs for the time being, the presidency said on Tuesday.

“(She remains minister) until all the requirements and processes related to the assumption of her new position of AU Commission chairperson have been completed,” it said in a statement.

“We will do our best to ensure that the good work that she has done in turning around the department of home affairs is carried forward,” President Jacob Zuma said in the statement.

He returned on Tuesday from the AU's two-day 19th Ordinary Session of heads of state and government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Dlamini-Zuma was elected.

She received 37 of the 51 votes and will assume the reins from Gabonese foreign minister Dr Jean Ping. - Sapa
