Election observers arrive in SA

The election observer team of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) has arrived in South Africa ahead of Wednesday’s local government polls.

The team were invited by the Independent Electoral Commission.

“The mission will make an impartial and independent assessment of the electoral process based on international standards and obligations stipulated in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, the Principles for Election Management, Monitoring and Observation (PEMMO) and the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation,” the institute said on Friday.

The mission comprises 14 observers who are drawn from civil society organisations across the continent.

They will assess pre-polling, the election day and post-polling activities.

The observers will be deployed in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the Western Cape.

It said preliminary statement on its findings would be released 24 hours after the polls close.
