Johannesburg - The DA’s mayoral candidates are confident that they have done enough to convince voters to choose them in Wednesday’s local government elections.

Herman Mashaba, the party’s Joburg mayoral candidate, told Independent Media at the DA’s Phetogo rally in Soweto on Saturday that his campaign trail for the past several months could get him the votes he needed to run the city.

“I am confident we are the only party that can bring change to provide services to poor areas,” said Mashaba.

While the DA’s national spokesperson Phumzile van Damme said they were not focused on numbers, they hoped 25 000 people would attend the opposition party’s last major rally.

“This is the high point of our campaign that we have delivered honestly with change that brings jobs and better services. We need every single one of them to turn up,” said Van Damme.

“The focus is not about the numbers but we are hoping 25 000 people will join us today,” she added.

Dobsinville Stadium is painted blue with hundreds of DA supporters dressed in the party’s regalia dancing and waving posters.

Some supporters told Independent Media of their hope for change through the DA.

Thirty-five-year-old Leverne Peterson from Eldorado Park could not hold back her excitement as she danced with her friends.

“Mmusi… he’s a big change. It’s not just talk and I am excited to see the change. There is a drug problem in Eldos and its destroying our children, our brothers and sisters and the DA will solve it,” said Peterson.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane will address the crowd later on Saturday. The party’s various leaders are also in attendance.

The DA hopes to win more than Cape Town this time round. It has its eye on the metros of Nelson Mandela Bay, Tshwane, and City of Joburg.
