Johannesburg - DA supporters have slowly started arriving for the party’s final rally at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Saturday morning.

The party hopes the stadium will be packed to the rafters with thousands of supports for the its final attempt to woo voters in the run-up to the local government elections on Wednesday.

Buses transporting supporters, dressed in the party’s blue shirts and hats, have arrived from across the province.

Those already seated, in the stadium’s blue seats, are singing and dancing while waving posters emblazoned with “vote for change” and “stop corruption”.

The rally’s theme is “Phetogo” which means “change” in Sesotho, which is the party's slogan for the elections.

This week the DA’s national spokesperson Phumzile van Damme said they had chosen to host in Dobsonville because the party’s leader was born there.

The rally is expected to be addressed by the party’s leader Mmusi Maimane flanked by metro mayoral candidates Herman Mashaba, Solly Msimanga, Ghaleb Cachalia, Patricia de Lille and Athol Trollip.

The party hopes to grab some of the country’s big metros; in Tshwane, Joburg, Ekurhuleni and Nelson Mandela Bay, where the ANC’s support base has softened over the years. On Friday Maimane and Mashaba spent the day in Soweto to rally support for the party.
