Cape Town - The FF Plus is seeking an urgent parliamentary debate on the public protector's report on upgrades to President Jacob Zuma's residence in Nkandla.

“The Freedom Front Plus will be asking the Speaker of the National Assembly [Max Sisulu] for an urgent debate of public interest about the Nkandla report,” party leader Pieter Groenewald said in a statement on Monday.

Although Parliament was in recess, the FF Plus viewed the issue as being of such public importance that Sisulu “will have to make an exception, and even organise a special session of Parliament”.

Groenewald said the request was different to the Democratic Alliance's substantive motion, which would “most probably be blocked by the ANC's majority”.

The DA is pushing to have Zuma impeached over the R246 million upgrades at his KwaZulu-Natal home.

Groenewald said a debate on the matter would ensure “that President Zuma and his ministers will at the very least have to debate the findings of the report in the National Assembly”.

He said his party was also starting a campaign - on FaceBook and on Twitter - with the slogan: “Protect the Public Protector.”

This was to ensure that incumbent Thuli Madonsela - who released the report last week - completed her term, “and that her safety is guaranteed”.
