Cape Town - The re-elected chairperson of the African National Congress in the Western Cape Marius Fransman on Sunday laid out his plans for winning back the province.

“It’s early days but we are going out there to win all the municipalities,” he said.

Fresh from winning his second term as chairperson unopposed, Fransman discussed strategy for the party’s way forward.

“We will invest deeply in capabilities development of our people,” he said.

“Looking at unemployment rates we must invest in the young people.”

Additionally, Fransman said one of the key areas the party would tackle was consolidating support among the black population in the Western Cape and dealing with challenges related to the coloured identity.

“There are psychological scars in the Western Cape… We must deal with the mind issues, building resilience of the mind,” he said.

Fransman added that when the rest of the new provincial executive committee (PEC) had been elected in a vote scheduled for 4pm on Sunday, they had to ask themselves: “Are we working smartly?”

Part of this, said Fransman, was an improved process of performance management, an enlarged volunteer base, registering the electorate, and modernising the ANC.

“The ANC is going through modernisation with IT and call centres and we have initiated talks about a think tank,” he said.

Additionally, said Fransman, the way in which the political economy had been structured through negations during the transition period needed to be reviewed.

“Is the way we structured the state post-apartheid conducive to delivering?” asked Fransman.

The election of the other four PEC members - secretary, deputy chair, assistant secretary, and treasurer - was underway at the conference taking place in Bellville.

The conference would end on Sunday evening.
