A Free State executive reshuffle was about protecting ANC chairman Ace Magashule’s political position, the provincial ANC Youth League said on Friday.

Secretary Lebogang Mogoera said the removal of the province's MEC for economic development, tourism and environmental affairs, Mxolisi Dukwana, was part of efforts to get rid of members seen as a threat to the premier.

He said it was carried out by “a faction which is hell-bent to cling to power by all costs... and purging comrades, particularly those that are being perceived to be a threat to the current sitting chairperson of the ANC”.

Magashule removed Dukwana in a provincial executive council reshuffle on Wednesday.

Member of the provincial legislature Olly Mlamleli was appointed new MEC for corporate governance, traditional affairs and human settlements. The former MEC for this department, Mamiki Qabathe, replaced Dukwana at economic development.

Free State government spokesman Wisani Ngobeni refused to give a reason for Dukwana’s removal.

Mogoera said the youth league acknowledged that Magashule was entitled to reshuffle his cabinet, but such a move should be based on good reasons.

The youth league said there had been no recent evaluation of government departments or the performance of MECs.

Mogoera said Magashule’s decision confirmed that those who appeared to be antagonistic to the premier would be isolated. – Sapa
