Free State - Free State health MEC Fundiswa “Fezi” Ngubentombi and a policeman have died in a car crash on the N1 outside Bloemfontein, the Free State government confirmed on Sunday.

Free State director general Elzabe Rockman said Ngubentombi and one of her bodyguards, Sergeant BC Motaung, were killed in the crash on Saturday night.

A child and a VIP protection unit policeman were injured. Rockman said they were in a stable condition in hospital and were expected to make a full recovery.

A former teacher and mother of five children, Ngubentombi was appointed health MEC in February 2011, after serving as the MEC for public works and rural development from 2009.

Rockman conveyed condolences to Ngubentombi's family, friends and colleagues.

She said Ngubentombi’s dedication and commitment to the work of the provincial government would leave a lasting legacy.
