Johannesburg -

Gauteng provincial legislature speaker Lindiwe Maseko announced the appointment of new cabinet and executive members at a sitting of the legislature on Tuesday.

Uhuru Moiloa was appointed as the legislature's new deputy speaker, replacing Stewart Ngwenya, who had resigned, Maseko said.

Moiloa, a former chairman of committees, was nominated and appointed unopposed during the legislature sitting.

Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, the former chairwoman of the portfolio committee on roads and transport, was nominated and appointed as chairwoman of committees, to replace Moiloa.

Last month, premier Nomvula Mokonyane reshuffled her provincial executive council after local government and housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi resigned.

Mmemezi quit after an integrity commission report presented to the Gauteng legislature found him guilty of contravening the province's code of conduct and ethics.

Health MEC Ntombi Mekgwe took over from Mmemezi.

Hope Papo was appointed the new health MEC and Nkosiphendule Kolisile took over as economic development MEC.

Former economic development MEC Qedani Mahlangu became infrastructure development MEC.

Outgoing infrastructure development MEC Bheki Nkosi was appointed the new head of the Gauteng gambling board.

On Tuesday, Maseko said that because of the reshuffle and a number of resignations, new committee chairs had been appointed.

The portfolio committee on social development had also been re-established.

Former education committee chairwoman Mamonare Chueu was appointed as the new chairwoman of social development.

Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, former chairwoman of the standing committee on community safety, would take over from Chueu as chairwoman of the portfolio committee on education.

Chairman of the standing committee on petitions Jacob Khawe was appointed new chairman of the standing committee on community safety.

Former chairwoman for gender youth and persons with disabilities Lindiwe Lasindwa was now the chairwoman of a standing committee on petitions.

Thuliswa Nkabinde was appointed new chairwoman of the portfolio committee on roads and transport.

Maseko said the reshuffle was done in terms of Rule 172 of the Standing Rules of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, which allowed the speaker to appoint and restructure committee membership. - Sapa
