Johannesburg - The Gauteng government is reviewing its safety and security plan, premier David Makhura said on Thursday.
“We are quite worried about the increase in certain types of crimes, especially violent crimes,” he told reporters in Germiston on Johannesburg's East Rand.
“We will not allow this province to be taken over by criminals.”
He was speaking during a two-day safety indaba the provincial government was hosting.
Makhura said the first session was a meeting with all law enforcement agencies in Gauteng where the problems facing the province were highlighted, as well as the areas where it was doing well.
“What I wanted to achieve was to get an unwavering commitment... from them that they are absolutely determined that we win the war against crime.
“We are here to do a comprehensive review strategy.”
The indaba would look at raising police morale and improving their capabilities.
The second session of the indaba to be held on Thursday afternoon was with civil society.
“The mood in the country is an important factor. The police alone will not win...” Makhura said.
Communities needed to be mobilised to help law enforcement agencies.
Crimes of concern to Makhura included crimes against children, an escalation of illegal mining, and taxi violence.
“We will not allow criminals to take over the streets.
“That's the commitment we have,” he said.
