Johannesburg - The Gauteng health department spent less than its allocated budget for the 2012/13 financial year, an annual report has found.
The provincial legislature said in a statement on Thursday that the provincial health portfolio committee's report on the department found “under expenditure” of one percent.
The department received R27 billion for the year, while its actual expenditure was R26bn.
“This resulted in an under expenditure of one percent, which illustrates an improvement from a 1.03 percent over expenditure in the previous financial year.”
The report was tabled by the committee's chair Molebatsi Bopape in the provincial legislature on Tuesday.
It found that R501 million was allocated to administration, R8bn to district health services, R1bn to emergency medical services, R6bn to provincial hospital services, R7bn to central hospital services, R807m for health science and training, R196m to health care support services and R1bn to health facilities management.
“The chairperson expressed the committee's satisfaction with the department's good performance and adherence to requirements of the Public Finance Management Act in all its expenditure,” the legislature said.
It said the committee used a report by the Auditor General “as a guide to determine whether resources allocated were used in an accountable manner”.
“The committee acknowledges that there is still room for improvement and the huge amount of work to be done. However it welcomes the performance of the department on both financials and non-financials during the year under review.”
