Goin' on down to Problem street

There are big problems in Cowey Road and Edith Benson Crescent on Durban's Berea as many entrepreneurs feel the new name for the streets could harm their businesses.

Both are now officially named after trade unionist Problem Mkhize, who died in 2006. In 1962 he went into exile in Tanzania. This is one of the more contentious of the 99 changes in the latest batch.

One property owner, who did want his details revealed for business reasons, said he had a prospective tenant decide not to take the premises because of the street name.

"He looked at everything and was happy but said he did not want his business on a street named Problem."

Alisa Windsor, who owns Going Places on Problem Mkhize, said she did not feel it was right that neutral names like Cowey had been changed. She said while they were not happy with the name they were more concerned that the city would not be tourism friendly.

Cowey Road business owner Chris Peckham said: "They should have given us a choice of say 10 names and then we could choose which one we wanted."

He said he did not see why it was necessary to change names in established roads like Cowey.

"Why don't they rename roads in KwaMashu that don't have names? If you drive through KwaMashu you will find Road 1 and Road 2 - they should be renaming these roads," said Peckham.

Peter Criticos, who also owns a business there, said he did not care much as long as it didn't affect his business. However, he felt in this case and in others in Durban, that the name changes were done to incite people.

He said he was not against name changes but felt they needed to be dealt with properly and not in a manner that antagonised people.
